A policeman detailed at the Intelligence Unit of the Northern Samar Police Provincial Office (NSPPO) died instantly after four (4) unknown suspects strafed him around 11:10AM January 10 in Brgy. Calingnan, Catubig, Northern Samar.
Police Regional Office-8 (PRO-8) Spokesperson Police Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya identified the victim as Police Staff Sergeant Joerel D. Pajac, 39, married and a resident of the aforementioned area. He is presently assigned at the NSPPO Intelligence Unit.
Initial investigation conducted by the Catubig Municipal Police Station disclosed that the victim was aboard a motorboat from his farm at Sitio Ugkad of the said barangay and was headed home. Report reveals that when the victim was about to disembark from the motorboat, four (4) unidentified suspects suddenly peppered the victim with gunshots.
The victim tried to jump into the river as to escape the ordeal but the suspects continued to shoot him. They then fled towards the direction of Brgy. San Francisco of the said town.
Witnesses described the assailants as if waiting for someone at the port.
Col. Rentuaya said that after more than an hour of searching, the body of the victim was recovered underwater. It was learned that the victim sustained gunshot wounds on his head and left shoulder and was immediately brought to Catubig District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Investigators recovered thirty (30) pieces of fired cartridge cases of caliber 45, two (2) pieces caliber 45 live ammunition and one (1) slug, while the service firearm of the victim submerged into the water and was not recovered.
The local police immediately conducted a hot pursuit operation against the fleeing suspects.
