Thousands evacuate as Agaton floods Ormoc

Robert C. Dejon | April 25, 2022

Two thousand fifty-seven (2057) Ormocanons have already evacuated to safer areas as torrential rains brought by Typhoon Agaton flooded the city this week.

According to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the thousands of evacuees came from 435 families being catered by the office as of 10PM of April 10.

Tzu Chi Great Love City in Brgy. Liloan has the most number of evacuees with 274 families involving 1,358 individuals; Brgy. Guintiguian followed with 215 individuals from 45 families, Brgy. Curva recorded 136 evacuees from 30 families, Brgy. Danhug has 102 individuals from 24 families, Brgy. San Isidro has 81 individuals from 20 families while Brgy. Quezon Jr. has 60 individuals from 15 families.

Fronting the Pagsangaan River, Brgy. Sabang Bao already recorded 32 evacuees from 9 families while the coastal barangay of Linao has 23 individuals from 6 families. Barangays Dolores and Dayhagan recorded 2 families apiece with 14 individuals while Cogon, Ipil, Alta Vista and Brgy. Dist. 29 all recorded a single family evacuee involving a total of 18 individuals.

Police Station 3 Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Lt. Rodolfo Mercolita disclosed that the evacuation commenced past 3PM April 10, mostly coming from Tzu Chi Great Love City. The evacuees were brought to the barangay evacuation center, the covered court and the Liloan National High School.

Sesenio Tumulak, a resident of Tzu Chi Great Love City, revealed that they have to evacuate quickly as water started to rise knee-deep that afternoon. Although floodwater was already imminent as early as 6AM that morning, they were hesitant to evacuate on the hope that the water will eventually subside. But as torrential rains continue to lash towards the afternoon and floodwaters rose, they’ve decided it’s best to evacuate.

All evacuees were recorded by the CSWDO for their relief assistance. Personnel from the Tzu Chi Foundation distributed ‘lugaw’ to the evacuees.
