Four girls, all minors, went to a local beach to beat the punishing heat only to meet a disastrous ending after a huge wave pulled them to deep waters and drowned them around 3PM May 29 at Baybay Beach, Brgy. Magsaysay, Bobon, Northern Samar.
PRO-8 Spokesperson Police Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya identified the casualties as Flor Bantayan Oliva, 13, student; Aira Agasang Bantayan, 10, student; and Honey Aleah Mica Bantayan, 10, student. The fourth victim was identified as Janice Bantayan Oliva, 13, student who is still missing as of press time. All were residents of the aforementioned barangay.
Lt. Col. Rentuaya said that a concerned citizen called the Bobon Municipal Police Station to report a drowning incident that happened in the said resort. Upon receipt of the information, the local police immediately responded to the area to conduct a search and retrieval operation. When they arrived at the area, they found out that there were four (4) female victims who were drowned at the distant part of the said resort.
Witnesses told the responding police that the victims were actually waddling and swimming at the shallow portion of the beach. Suddenly a strong current of the wave pulled them to the deeper portions of the sea.
The local police immediately coordinated with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Bobon and Catarman and the Provincial DRRMO of Northern Samar to rescue the victims and were able to retrieve three (3) bodies with one (1) still missing.
The retrieved bodies were rushed to the Northern Samar Provincila Hospital in Catarman but were all declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Continuous retrieval operations were conducted by the responding DRRMOs as of press time.
