A coordinator of an illegal number game locally known as ‘swertres’ was apprehended by a composite team evening of January 26 at Sitio Tru-Cut, Brgy. Sto. Rosario, Matag-ob, Leyte.
Matag-ob Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Lt. Kemy Bas identified the suspect as Ruel Avila y Pedrano, 34, married, a swertres collector and a resident of Brgy. San Dionisio, this town. The suspect is also an employee of the local government unit (LGU Matag-ob) deployed at the vice-mayor’s office.
The suspect was apprehended by operatives from the Special Operations Group and the Provincial Intelligence Unit of the Leyte Provincial Police Office and the personnel of the Matag-ob Municipal Police Station.
Recovered from the suspect were one (1) P20.00 bill bearing serial number BV 164953 used as marked money, collected bets amounting to P3, 179.00 in different denominations and assorted illegal gambling paraphernalia. Also recovered were a black-and-white RUSI DL 125 motorcycle with key, a blue ballpen, and a black sling bag where most of the paraphernalia and bet money were found.
In an interview with the suspect, he admit being an employee stationed at the VM office and his sideline as a swertres coordinator. He dropped his financier, a certain Noli Go, also operates swertres in the neighboring town up to the third (3rd) district.
The operatives said that they are now conducting thorough investigation as to verify and locate the identity of the said Noli Go.
The suspect is temporarily detained at the Matag-ob Municipal Police Station while charges to violations of the Act Increasing Penalties for Illegal Numbers Games, Amending Certain Provisions of Presidential Decree No. 1602 (RA 9287) are being readied against him.
