Two (2) of the suspects of the bloody ambush that resulted to the death of the leaders of a mayoral candidate were arrested during the hot pursuit operations around 6:22AM February 7 at Brgy. Nabulo, Sta. Margarita, Samar.
The said joint operation was launched by the tracking teams of the PRO-8 Regional Intelligence Division, the 43rd Infantry “We Search” Battalion of the Philippine Army and the Sta. Margarita Municipal Police Station.
Sta. Margarita Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Lt. Lorbin Deraco identified the suspects as Renato Macorol, 50, married and a farmer; and Jimmy Casaljay, 39 and married. Both were residents of the aforementioned barangay.
Lt. Deraco, in an interview, disclosed that they were able to locate the suspects after a survivor, a certain Ronnie Medoranda, identified two (2) of them and their allegedly leader Jimmy Managaysay. He said that after responding to the crime scene yesterday (Feb 6), he immediately requested support from the tracking teams of the PRO and the battalion to conduct a hot pursuit operation against the identified suspects.
With Brgy. Nabulo situated more than eight (8) kilometers from the town proper, the police chief revealed they had to do their operations in the evening as to conceal their activity.
Deraco continued that when the tracking teams located their houses that day, they immediately surrounded the area and later introduced themselves as lawmen and arrested the two suspects. The suspects denied participation in the ambush and resist arrest therefore causing commotion. The residents of the barangay initially reacted and refused to hand over the suspects but the operatives persisted on arresting them and brought them to the police station.
Three (30 counts of murder and two (2) counts of frustrated murder are now being prepared against the suspects who are temporarily detained at the Sta. Margarita Municipal Police Station.
