Armed men suspected to be members of the terrorist New People’s Army burn down a backhoe used in the road construction of an upland village around 8:30PM February 3 at Brgy. Nawi, Paranas, Samar.
Paranas Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Major Kim Windell Montilla disclosed that around 11:40AM February 4, one Gil Carias, 44, married and a foreman of Northern Samar Builders approached their office to report an arson incident that occurred in the aforementioned barangay. The police force immediately responded to the area, around 30kms from the town proper, and upon arrival saw the backhoe totally damaged.
Initial investigation revealed that around 8:30PM of February 3, residents in the said barangay saw a fire broke out some 500m away from their houses. Upon verification, they discovered that the fire was torching a Kumatzo PC 200 backhoe owned by Engr. Lope Deporada, Jr. that was parked at the shoulder of a road under construction. Armed with flashlights, they also noticed unidentified persons near the backhoe that flashed their own flashlights to them. This prompt them to leave the area and report the incident to their village officials.
Major Montilla continued that the foreman was at their bunkhouse in the neighboring village of Concepcion when he learned about the incident. He waited for daytime to report the incident to his contractor and to the police. The police chief assured they are launching thorough investigation as to identify the culprits. As of press time, they still are clueless as to the motive and the identity of the perpetrators.
The police also disclosed that two (2) people already died on the construction of the said road. They were the pastor who initially wanted the road to be constructed and was followed by the barangay kagawad who maneuvered to push through the construction a couple years ago.
