Seven (7) fishermen were rescued by personnel of M/V Joyful Stars of the Roble Shipping Lines when their fishing boat capsized due to rough seas around 12:45PM April 9 at the seawaters between Hilongos, Leyte and San Francisco, Camotes, Cebu.
The rescued fishermen were identified as Kim Rica, 22, Jayson Bercasio, 31, Joeco Bercasio, 24, Joshua Gonzaga, 24, Niko Suralta, 15, John Rodel Basay, 15 and boat captain Orlando Suralta. All were residents of Tulang Dako, San Francisco, Camotes, Cebu.
The survivors told ship captain Capt. Jesus Lavesores that they were heading home when they encountered big waves before noon that day. As the seawater started to enter the boat and reached the engine, they started to feel the problem. Eventually, the seawaters inside caused the engine to conked out. Fortunate enough, passengers of the passing ship bound for Cebu noticed them and rescued them.
A passenger, Remus Amodia, took a video footage of the operation and disclosed that the rescue operation commenced around 12:30PM until every fisherman boarded the ship around 1:15PM. The ship crew provided the survivors clothes and food.
