A senior citizen succumbed to death after she was bumped by an L-300 van around 4:50PM January 31 along the Maharlika Highway in Sitio Wangag, Brgy. Damulaan, Albuera, Leyte.

Albuera Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Major Herbert Prias identified the victim as Violeta Antigua y Montalban, 66, widow, jobless and a resident of the said barangay. The L-300 van was manned by a certain Romeo Cala, Jr. y Ababat, with live-in partner, a driver and a resident of Brgy. San Agustin, Baybay City, Leyte.

Initial investigation revealed that the L-300 van, a Mitsubishi L300 aluminum van bearing plate number HAB-7418 and registered under Panny’s Home Bake Products Inc., was travelling from Naval, Biliran and was heading home in Baybay. Upon reaching the place of incident, Cala swerved his vehicle to overtake another vehicle. However, the victim suddenly ran across the road and right into the speeding and overtaking vehicle.

The victim was thrown unconscious to the side of the road and sustained injuries to the different parts of her body while the driver was unscathed. A dent on the driver’s side of the van was noticed and possible a result of the impact of the collision.

Responding rescuers from the Albuera Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC-Albuera) quickly rushed the victim to the Albuera Rural Health Unit but attending physician Dra. Naomi Mencidor declared the victim dead-on-arrival.

The driver, together with the vehicle, was brought to the Albuera Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.
