Road mishap claims lives of police, back rider

Personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and his back rider died in a road accident afternoon of October 15 along the Maharlika Highway in Brgy. Bato, Biliran, Biliran.


The casualties were identified as Police Staff Sergeant Albert Abanggan, 37, assigned at the Almeria Municipal Police Station, and a resident of Brgy. Calumpang, Naval, Biliran; and his back rider Lloyd J. Lucente, 36, a resident of Brgy. Sto. Niño, Naval.


Police records indicate that the victims were traversing the highway of Brgy. Bato heading towards the town proper of Biliran when suddenly Abanggan lost control of his motorcycle while taking a curve and accidentally bumped the left side of an incoming Mitsubishi Expander throwing them to the road.


A Hi-Ace passenger van trailing (the vehicle) tried to evade bumping the Expander and instead ran over the riders resulting in their instantaneous deaths.


The driver of the Mitsubishi Expander was identified as Solomon Merez, Jr. y Abao, a school principal, and a resident of Brgy. Bato, Biliran; while the passenger van was manned by Real Rodriguez y Amahan, a resident of Brgy. Binulho, Javier, Leyte.


Both were taken, along with their vehicles, to the Biliran Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.
