This year’s commemoration is bannered on the theme “The Dedication and Sacrifice of the Men of Valor is the Pinnacle of Patriotism.”

The said commemoration is in observance of Proclamation No. 164 of President Rodrigo Duterte declaring the 25th of January of every year as a Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic Sacrifice of the SAF-44.

To recall, the SAF-44 met a fateful incident during an operation last January 25, 2015, a Sunday, at Tukanalipao, Mamasapano, Maguindanao against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Police Major General Walter E. Castillejos was the Guest of Honor and Speaker (GoHaS) of the event and led the wreath laying ceremony. The said activity was also witnessed by the families of the members of SAF-44 who hailed the the region. In attendance were Tely Sumbilla (mother of PO3 John Lloyd R. Sumbilla), Pat Ruel Balaca (PO2 Noel N. Balaca), Luz Bedua (mother of PO2 Glenn Berecio Bedua), Ronald Ramacula (father of PO2 Rodel Eva Ramacula) Kristine Clemencio (wife of PO1 Mark Lory O. Clemencio), Flavio and James Sagonoy (father and brother of PO1 Joseph G. Sagonoy).

Also present was Police Lt. Solomon A. Agayso, one of the survivors of the incident.

PRO-8 Regional Director Police Brig. Gen. Rommel Bernardo A. Cabagnot directed all line units to make the commemoration a public awareness to honor the bravery of the fallen elite force of the PNP. "May their deaths be an inspiration to all the police in the country as we will always honor the sacrifices and memories of our fallen heroes. May we all be motivated in our daily lives as police officers and to the families, may you find peace and healing,” Cabagnot said.
