Reliable court general Kobe Palencia earned the Best Homegrown Player Award even as the OCCCI-Ormoc SHEERMasters went scoreless in the best-of-three finals showdown against top-seed CPG Bohol Pure Mineral Water Dolphins in the recently concluded GlobalPort-Vismin Super Cup in Zamboanga City.
The SHEERMasters suffered a fourth quarter meltdown in Game 1 after leading for most part of the game. The Dolphins carried over their momentum in Game 2 to sweep the series against their lone tormentors.
Palencia, the brightest star coming off St. Peter’s College, averaged 8.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists throughout the grueling month-long tournament. Moreover, Palencia held his ground and composure against bigger and more experienced backcourt counterparts.
Against the Dolphins in Game 1, the SHEERMasters looked poised to upset the tournament’s top team. But a fourth quarter adjustment from coach Edsel Vallena foiled the Ormocanons bid. In Game 2, the Dolphins quickly asserted their dominance and held on to thwart the upstart SHEERMasters, 84-77.
SHEERMasters veteran reinforcements Gabby Espinas and Paul Sanga were named into the Mythical Five Selection alongside Nikko Panganiban of the Dolphins, Reed Friar Juntilla of the host Zamboanga Valientes and Shaq Alanes of MACFI-Basilan Golden Lions.
Panganiban was awarded Finals MVP while Juntilla was named Best Player of the Conference.
