A public school teacher back-riding aboard a motorcycle was killed while his driver is in critical condition after colliding head-on an incoming dump truck while eluding a stray dog around 7AM February 16 along the Maharlika Highway of Brgy. Macopa, Jaro, Leyte.
PRO-8 Spokesperson Police Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya identified the casualty as Rulito Decio y Osayan, 32, single and a public school teacher at the Alangalang National High School. The motorcycle driver was identified as Arnel Agcaoili, of legal age. Both victims are residents of Brgy. Abango, Barugo, Leyte.
Initial investigation disclosed that both vehicles were traversing the national highway in opposite direction. The motorcycle, a Honda XRM bearing plate number 080107, was traveling from Tunga heading for Alangalang. Upon reaching the place of incident, the vehicle tried to elude a stray dog that suddenly crossed the road. The motorcycle swerved to the opposite lane and slammed head-on to an incoming dump truck.
The dump truck, marked Oday, is a FUSO truck bearing plate number JAB-1336 manned by Rio Malinao y Rosialda of Brgy. Bato, Biliran, Biliran. The heavy equipment was coming from Pastrana, Leyte and heading for Naval, Biliran.
The collision brought the victims crashing on the concrete highway and under the dump truck. It took several rescuers to remove the bodies of the victims from under the truck.
Multiple severe injuries were inflicted to the victims, with the teacher dead on-the- spot. The driver survived and was rushed to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) in Tacloban City and is in critical conditions.
The truck driver surrendered to the responding police and was brought to the Jaro Municipal Police Station, together with the vehicles involved, for documentation and proper disposition.
