Motorboat caught fire at sea; 1 dead, 3 missing

A passenger died, three (3) are still missing while 161 were rescued when a passenger boat from Ubay, Bohol heading towards Bato, Leyte caught fire around 1PM June 26 at the seawaters of Brgy. Tugas, Tugas Island and Brgy. Tilmubo, Tilmobo in Ubay.


The Coast Guard Eastern Visayas District said that the skipper of MBCA/Mama Mary Chloe called the Coast Guard Station in Ubay and reported that the boat experienced fire while on their way to Leyte. The fire, which is still being investigated as of press time, reportedly started from the engine room of the boat.

A passing motorboat owned by Leopards Motorboat Services rescued 99 passengers and brought them to the Port of Hilongos. A passenger, identified by his Facebook account as Bo Ra Bog, disclosed that a boat crew said that the fire started from the engine room and conflagrated the whole vessel.


The Coast Guard reported that 25 passengers were brought to Carlos P. Garcia, 37 were brought to Gaus Island, also of Carlos P. Garcia but three (3) of those were unidentified as they immediately left the area.


The casualty was identified as Adolfo Rañola from Trinidad, Bohol while three (3) are still missing. The Coast Guard said that they are still doing headcount of the survivors as many (boats) came to help and rescue and brought them to different places.
