Twenty-eight (28) different vehicles were apprehended and issued citation tickets when the Land Transportation Office (LTO-Ormoc) conducted a hasty operation January 29 along the Maharlika Highway linking Ormoc and Kananga, Leyte.
LTO-Ormoc Assistant Chief Manny Sevilla disclosed that the operation stemmed from various complaints from drivers and commuters, and those on social media, of the muddy and slippery roads caused by dump trucks and sugarcane trucks.
With the sugarcane harvest season started to hit full swing coupled with a rainy weather, drivers and commuters are again treated to the muddy roads as sugarcane haulers actively traverse the thoroughfares. On a fair sunny day, the mud will dry up and bring annoying dust on the roads. Aside from the sugarcane trucks, there are also complaints of mud from trucks along the Juaton-Concepcion road wherein a multi-million project is underway.
These and in line with the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) 2014-1 pertaining to the Revised Schedule of Fines and Penalties for Violations of Laws, Rules and Regulations Governing Land Transportation prompted his office to conduct the said inspection. Sevilla disclosed that the 28 apprehended that day have violations ranging from illegal parking, reckless driving and colorum public utility vehicles (PUV). Corresponding penalties for violators range from P1000.00 for illegal parking, P2000.00 for reckless driving and P6000.00 for colorum operations of tricycles.
The operations will be done regularly by virtue of the said JAO, Sevilla said. He assured that if a motorist will only adhere to what is mandated by law, apprehensions and fines will be unnecessary.
