Robert C. Dejon | February 16, 2022

A Grade 11 student died after drowning while swimming with his father around 9:20AM February 8 along the shoreline of Brgy. Dist.1, Hinundayan, Southern Leyte.

PRO-8 Spokesperson Police Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya identified the casualty as Romil Gata y Fortunico alias Anyano, 17, single, a Grade 11 student and resident of Brgy. Baculod, this town.

Initial investigation disclosed that the victim was with his father, Ranil Gata, and went for an early morning swim in the aforementioned place. The father went to neck-deep waters to swim while the victims was staying at the very shallow portion of the sea. However, strong waves suddenly dragged the victim to deeper waters. The victim was later known as a non-swimmer and despite draining his strength to wrestle his way back the shore, faltered and drowned.

Responding rescuers from the local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) tried to revive the victim but failed. The victim was rushed to the Dr. Zenon Lagumbay Memorial Hospital but was declared dead-on-arrival by attending physician Dra. Pamela Lagumbay.

The victim’s cadaver was brought to a local funeral parlor then to his home.
