A drunken farmer is now behind bars after operatives nabbed him for holding a passerby at gunpoint around 10:30PM January 13 at Brgy. Can-andan, Isabel, Leyte.

Isabel, Leyte Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Major Edgar de Asis identified the suspect as Eddie Mendoza y Ebatados, 49, single, a farmer and a resident of the aforementioned barangay. The victim was identified as Ronelito Gulani, 52, a tailor and a resident of Brgy. Sto Niño of the same town.

Chief Investigator Police Senior Master Sergeant Joel Soqueña disclosed that Brgy. Captain Marcelo Lamoste of Can-andan called their office of an armed person threatening the residents of his barangay.

The office quickly responded and upon arrival, was pointed to the suspect. Resisting arrest, the suspect was frisked immediately and the operatives were able to recover one (1) unit .357 caliber Smith and Wesson magnum with three (3) live ammos and without serial number. Also recovered was a fourteen (14) inch double-bladed knife with scabbard tucked in his waist.

During an interview of the suspect at the Provincial Prosecutors Office in Ormoc City, he admitted owning the confiscated contrabands. He disclosed that after he was beaten by unidentified persons, he bought a homemade revolver for P3, 500.00 for protection. During that evening, he thought Gulani was amongst those who manhandled him and he wanted to confront him.

Gulani revealed that he was heading home when he met the suspect who hoisted a gun at him prompting him to shout for help. The commotion called the attention of residents who quickly informed PB Lamoste. The chieftain then called the local police.

The suspect failed to present necessary documents to possess the confiscated weapons. No authorization from the Commission on Elections as to carry firearm was also shown.

The suspect and the confiscated deadly weapons were brought to the Isabel Municipal Police Station for documentation and proper disposition. Charges to violations of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act (RA 10591), COMELEC Resolution No. 10728 (Omnibus Election Code) and grave threats were already filed against the suspect at the Provincial Prosecutors Office.
