Robert C. Dejon | January 23, 2022

The Department of Health-Eastern Visayas confirms eight hundred and seventy-nine (879) new CoVID19 cases in January 20, the highest single-day tally since the pandemic began.

DOH-8 Spokesperson Jelyn Lopez-Malabago disclosed that the office is now considering having the Omicron variant in this latest spike even though the samples sent to the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) has yet arrived. She added that a total of 90 samples were sent to the PGC for testing and said that the criteria of samples for testing “should have a CT value of less than 30, coming from a place with clustering of cases, and should be from the different parts of the region”.

The 879 cases came out of the 1,275 laboratory results of which 1258 samples were tested in three (3) COVID19 laboratories in the region. The other 17 were submitted to the Philippine Red Cross Molecular Laboratory (PRCML). The 879 cases represented 69% positivity rate, the highest recorded in the region.

Topping the charts is the Province of Leyte with 299 new cases while Tacloban City tallied 180 cases. The provinces of Samar and Eastern Samar tallied record-breaking single-day numbers after having 156 and 121 new cases, respectively.

Ormoc City registered 42 new cases, the Province of Southern Leyte logged 47, the Province of Biliran has 24 and the Province of Northern Samar recorded 10 new cases.

The 42 new cases for Ormoc City escalated the city’s active cases 219 after recording a spike of 177 cases for the past couple weeks.

As of January 20, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) put the Province of Northern Samar under Alert Level 4 while Ormoc City, Tacloban City and the provinces of Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar and Samar are under Alert Level 3.

Meanwhile, the region has logged a total 2,116,461 fully vaccinated individuals and 2,511,674 already inoculated with their first doses.
