The rampant dynamite fishing activities in the Province of Samar has been proven once again after a fisherman was killed and two (2) others sustained injuries when a homemade explosive they used in fishing blew up around 7:35AM June 7 at Sto. Niño, Samar.
The casualty was identified as Emiliano Davila, 40. The two injured, cousins to the deceased, were identified as Rolan Davila, 28; and Jorgie Davila, 31. The three were residents of Sitio Salvacion, Brgy, Ilijan, of the aforementioned town.
Investigation disclosed that Emiliano was about to heave the homemade explosive, locally known as badil, when it exploded resulting to his death.
His companions sustained serious injuries on their bodies and were rushed to the Calbayog City District Hospital for treatment.
This recent disaster proves that despite strong campaigns from the national and local government, illegal fishing is still rampant in parts of the Province of Samar.
Under the law against illegal fishing, a penalty of five (5) to ten (10) years imprisonment and confiscation of the catch awaits those who use explosives, noxious or poisonous substance, and electricity.
