A manhunt is launched against a detainee of the Leyte Provincial Jail in Palo, Leyte who escaped from his jail guard around 11AM January 11 in front of the Bulwagan nga Katarungan along Magsaysay Boulevard, Tacloban City.
The suspect was identified as Byron Murillo, 39, a resident of Brgy. San Diego, Alangalang, Leyte and a detainee of the provincial jail facing estafa charges.
Investigation disclosed that Prison Guard I Remegio Murillo, 56, single and a resident of Brgy. 91, Abucay, Tacloban City was escorting the detainee at the Bulwagan ng Katarungan for a scheduled court hearing. The jail guard was later identified as the suspect’s uncle.
However, the hearing was cancelled.
As they returned to their service vehicle, the suspect’s live-in partner, a certain Ana Marie Gatela y Cañeda, 26, self-employed and a resident of Brgy. Holy Child-1, Alangalang, Leyte, approached the jail guard and requested to talk with the detainee. The jail guard later acceded and escorted the detainee to Gatela’s white Nissan van bearing plate number HAA-4236.
While the two (2) were talking inside the van, the driver, known as Richard Cinco y Murillo, disembarked and talked with the jail guard. Minutes later, the detainee asked for the key purposely to turn-on the air conditioner.
Nonetheless, he drove off the said vehicle and escaped instead.
While escaping, the live-in partner said she tried to stop the detainee but was instead punched on her lips and was dropped at the Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC) about 500m away from the justice hall.
The getaway vehicle was later found abandoned at Jones Street, Tacloban City fronting the Filipino Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade Inc.
