Robert C. Dejon | February 13, 2022

A soldier was killed while a civilian was wounded when a gunfight between state forces and suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) erupted around 6:50AM February 5 at the hinterlands of Brgy. Senonogan de Tubang, Silvino Lubos, Northern Samar.

The casualty was identified as Pfc John Jeffrey Dabalos, 22, single and a resident of Brgy. Tabawan, Calbayog City. The victim is a member of the 19th Infantry (Commando) Battalion based in Northern Samar. He is the eldest of the brood of six (6) and the breadwinner of the family.

Accordingly, the army was conducting their regular patrols as part of the security arrangements for the Community Support Program (CSP) Team in the said barangay when they were ambushed by members of the NPA. Pfc Dabalos suffered headshot wound that caused his instant death.

A civilian, identified as Erwin Dela Cruz, caught in the crossfire suffered a slight hit on his head but was immediately rescued by the troops. It was believed that the perpetrators are under the command of Acer Torcido alias RR who is frequently seen extorting money and food provisions from the residents in the area.

The soldier’s body was brought to the St. Peter’s Funeral Homes in Catarman while the civilian was brought to a hospital in Silvino Lubos.
