A member of the New People’s Army faltered after figuring in a crossfire against the state forces around 1:45PM February 21 at the forested area of Brgy. Deit de Turag, Silvino Lubos, Northern Samar.
Former NPA members identified the casualty as Nonoy Olanggo, 28, single, a resident of the aforementioned barangay and a member of the Front Committee 1, Sub-Regional Committee ‘Emporium’ of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee.
The skirmish lasted for around twenty (20) minutes before the terrorists scampered to different directions, leaving behind a casualty with an automatic M16 rifle with one (1) magazine loaded with ten (10) live rounds and other war materials. The soldiers believed they’ve encountered the same NPA group that was responsible for the death of two (2) minors in the adjacent town of Catubig weeks ago. Bloodstains were found in the area left by the rebels, indicating more could been hit while escaping towards the tri-boundary of Silvino Lubos, Las Navas and Pambujan.
LGU of Silvino Lobos facilitated the post-mortem procedures and worked on the interment of the dead terrorist that already show early stage of decomposition.
"This could not have happened had Nonoy surrendered to the government. The government had always been open, reaching out, and convincing the combatant terrorists to return to the folds of the law and live peacefully with their love ones" said Maj General Edgardo De Leon, Commander Joint Task Force Storm and 8ID.
"Sa mga may kamag-anak na NPA, humihingi po kami ng tulong sa inyo na makumbinse ang inyong mga kamaganak na magbagong buhay. Malaki ang maitutulong ng mga magulang at kapatid ng mga rebelde, upang kumbinsihin ang kanilang mga kamaganak na magbalik loob na at mamuhay ng payapa kapiling ng mga mahal nila sa buhay," De Leon concluded.
