A concrete mixer truck driver meet untimely death while his helper suffered a fractured leg after their vehicle collided a stationary wing van around 5PM January 17 along the Maharlika Highway in Brgy. Naghalin, Kananga, Leyte.
Kananga Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Major Ariel Salarda identified the casualty as Jacinto Claus y Caparos, 50, married, mixer truck driver and a resident of Brgy. Cabulihan, Ormoc City. The helper was identified as Juanito Olila, 29, married and a resident of Brgy. Buga, Calubian, Leyte.
Investigation disclosed that the mixer truck, bearing Blue Sapphire Construction signage and plate number NAS 1846 with no official receipt/certificate of registration (OR/CR) presented, was traversing the national highway heading for the town proper when an unidentified pickup truck overtook and cut the lane. The driver quickly applied brakes but unfortunately lost control of the steering wheel causing it to ram into a stationary wing van bearing Evolution Azzult Trading signage and plate number KAL-3625 with OR no. 2107733714 dated 07-21-2021 and CR no. 425156314 registered under a certain Jobo Ceasar Beltran Aguilar of Camangahan, Guimbal, Iloilo and manned by a certain Darwin Vargas from Quezon City.
The collision had the truck rolled-over to its right side, stuck Claus at the steering wheel while his helper was slammed at the windshield.
Residents immediately called the Kananga Rescue Group assess the situation. The rescue group used their equipment to pull the driver out while the helper was quickly brought to the Kananga Community Hospital.
It took several minutes before the driver was extracted from the truck cockpit and was rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment. The attending physician, Dr. Sharon Awit, however declared the victim dead on arrival.
The concrete truck was then brought to the Kananga Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.
