A six-year old child with special needs was found lifeless floating near the bridge of Soro-Soro River around 3PM January 30 at Brgy. Soro-soro, Maasin City.
Maasin City Chief-of-Police (COP) Police Lt. Col. Mar Epilogo identified the victim as Kariel Ladrera, 6 years old and a resident of the aforementioned barangay.
Local police disclosed that they received a call around 9:30PM January 30 informing of a drowning incident at Soro-Soro River. They immediately deployed personnel led by Police Master Sergeant John Ryan M. Quisado and upon arrival learned that the victim was already brought to the Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital in Brgy. Mantahan here.
Initial investigation conducted by the responding police disclosed that the victim was left by the parents to the care of her elder sister Kaila, a 13 year old student. Kaila was tasked by her parents to watch over Kariel because they, Erwin and Jesica, have to go to Purok Balite to check on the lumbers they ordered for their house which was destroyed by Super Typhoon Odette last December. However, while the siblings were left at home, the victim got a chance to come out of their house and went to the river where she was later found floating and already drowned.
Concerned citizens immediately rescued the child and brought to the nearest hospital for immediate treatment but the child was declared by Physician on Duty Dr. Katherine C De La Cruz as dead on arrival.
