Chief tanod yields firearm, ammos

A chief tanod is now inside the detention facility of the Sta. Margarita Municipal Police Station after being arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunitions evening of January 23 at Purok 1, Brgy. Cautod, this town.


Regional Public Information Officer (PIO) Police Lt. Col. Ma. Belle Rentuaya identified the suspect as Erwin Rojas y Mara, 40, married, a construction worker, chief tanod of Brgy. Panabatan and presently residing at Purok 1, Brgy. Monbon, this town.


Lt. Col. Rentuaya disclosed that a concerned citizen approached Police Executive Master Sergeant Joel O. Calagos, Jr. to report an armed individual near Pandi Pane Bakery. Sergeant Calagos acted on the information tipped and approached the suspect whom has a gun tucked in his waist. He introduced himself as a lawman and frisked the suspect who didn’t resist arrest. When the suspect failed to present documents for the firearm, he was arrested.


Sergeant Calagos is a native of Brgy. Monbon, Sta. Margarita and is presently assigned as the Regional Special Operations Group (RSOG) at Camp Kangleon, Palo, Leyte. He was in town attending a mass at St. James Parish when the incident happened.


Recovered from the suspect was one (1) black .45 caliber pistol marked STI EDGE with bird logo and serial number 818715, one (1) inserted magazine containing seven (7) live ammunition. Also recovered from the suspect was a sling bag, one (1) red Nokia cellphone and other personal items.



Suspect is now detained and will be charged for violations of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act (RA 10591), Sec. 261 of the Omnibus Election Code and Sec. 32 of RA 7166 in relation to COMELEC Resolution No. 10728.
