At least fifty-one (51) hogs from Brgy. Ibarra in Maasin City are scheduled for culling after a laboratory test released by the Regional Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (RADL) showed that the death of hogs from a piggery here was due to the African swine fever (ASF).
The report, signed by Norietta Ursua, DVM, and Archie T. Lluz, DVM, disclosed that the hogs from Ibarra was tested positive for ASF Viral DNA. The testing of blood samples were done March 3.
It was learned that a piggery owner reported to the City Veterinary Office that after one of his livestock died in March 1, two (2) hogs, including a boar, died the following day.
City Veterinarian Dr. Rey Alinsub, DVM, immediately took blood samples of all the hogs in the said piggery and sent it to the RADL. The findings received by his office confirmed that the deaths were caused by the ASF.
In an interview with local media, Dr. Alinsub foresees a possible decrease of supply of live swine after the release of the RADL results confirm the presence of ASF. Piggeries withing one (1) kilometer radius from Ibarra were already declared Quarantine Zone and every live swine is under surveillance and observed.
Dr. Alinsub also appealed to hog growers to refrain from swill feeding as fears that leftovers could contain food infected with ASF. Ibarra has already been locked down for ASF.
