“I didn’t promise but I’ve accomplished concreting more than two (2) kilometers of road (concreting)”, thus proclaimed Palompon Municipal Mayor Georgina Arevalo during her visit to Brgy. Catigahan recently.
The honorable local chief executive pertains to the ‘S’ road that conjuncts the barangays of Catigahan, Belen, San Pablo and San Roque which concreting was already finished. The said road used to be treacherous especially heading towards the uplands. With the road already paved, she expected that life on the aforementioned barangays would be alleviated.
Mayor Arevalo disclosed that the bidding for the continuation of the project has already been approved but has to be reverted back to finance the government’s pandemic measures. The project is projected to cost P45M sourced from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) courtesy of Leyte 4th District Representative Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez and will cover over 2kms. The municipal treasury, however, has yet to allocate any amount to counterpart the funding of the said project.
Constituents in these barangays will now shelve their laborious experiences of traversing the said road. The concreting of such will also ease their livelihood as they now have access to a comfortable road.
From muddy roads to vehicular accidents, the constituents bore witness to the challenges and difficulties there. The logistical expenses to transport farm produce down to the town proper was very expensive. “A sack of banana here used to cost P150 but the transport and labor cost for this banana to reach the town cost P250,” Mayor Arevalo said. This resulted to expensive commodities aside from compromising the quality of the farm produce.
“Pero wala na ni karon kay maayo na ang karsada,” she said.
Mayor Arevalo also revealed that this road has been a subject of electoral promises of the former administrations. She cited that a former mayor used to promise to address this problem but to futile results even if the latter spent eighteen (18) years in office. She hoped that the pandemic will be gone so that the project could be completed. As of press time, the Arevalo administration has allocated P2M for the continuation of road concreting towards Barangay Belen, the town’s farthest upland barangay.
