Four (4) suspects were arrested after ignoring a Task Force – Asian Swin Fever (TF-ASF) border checkpoint around 6PM on July 28 at Brgy. Benabaye, Merida, Leyte.
The suspects were identified as Jeffrey Paloma y Pening, 22, male, married, self-employed, the driver of the sidecar locally known as “tura-tura”, and a resident of Brgy. Canbantug, Merida, Leyte; Bienvinido Pening y Macion, 70, male, married, self-employed, Paloma’s back-rider, and also from Canbantug; Michael Dionesio y Pada, 30, male, married, self-employed, driver of the 2nd tura-tura, and a resident of Brgy. Manlilinao, Ormoc City; and alias Lenlen, female, of legal age, the back-rider of Dionesio, and a resident of Brgy. Bilwang, Isabel, Leyte.
The said checkpoint was established by the Local Government Unit of Merida, Leyte pursuant to Executive Order No. 28. Manning the checkpoint were Municipal Agriculturist Francis V. Abarre, Brgy. Benabaye Chairwoman Marialee Corolla Ablen, and Dolcisimo Oliveros, a government employee.
It was known that the TF-ASF flagged down the two (2) motorcycles (tura-tura) loaded with live pigs from Isabel but the driver ignored and eluded the authorities manning the checkpoint. Abarre immediately called police assistance and the suspects were apprehended at the Upper Highway, Brgy. Poblacion in Merida. They were said to be heading to Ormoc.
Confiscated were the 2 tura-tura including the eighteen (18) live hogs with an estimated value of P107,000.00. The suspects alongside the confiscated items are now under the custody of the Merida MPS for proper disposition.
